The Utah Mammoth delivered a statement performance on Thursday night, defeating the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on the road to snap Edmonton’s five-game winning streak. Clayton Keller led the way with two goals, while Barrett Hayton and Logan Cooley also scored for Utah. The win pushed the Mammoth to a 6-2-0 record and extended their current winning streak to three games.
Mammoth Erase a Difficult Historical Record
The victory carried extra significance beyond the standings. Edmonton had dominated Utah throughout the franchise’s short history, going 5-0-1 in previous meetings and outscoring the Mammoth 31-16. At home specifically, the Oilers held a perfect 3-0-0 record against Utah, outscoring them 17-5. Thursday’s result changed all of that.

Utah head coach Andre Tourigny praised his team’s defensive commitment after the game. “I’m really proud of the way we defended, the way we played away from the puck,” he said. “We were really structured, were physical and I think we made it hard, every inch on the ice, for the team on the other side.” Tourigny added that his players competed with emotion while staying disciplined throughout the contest.
Hayton’s goal was particularly noteworthy. He scored his first of the season and extended his points streak to five games. The Mammoth matched New Jersey’s offer sheet for Hayton during the off-season, and he is already proving his value. “It took a lot. I think we had a ton of focus,” Hayton said. “They’re a great team over there, they’ve had a great start to the season, so it was a big challenge for us and I thought we embraced it.”
Cooley and McDavid Weigh In
Logan Cooley reflected on what the win means for Utah’s confidence going forward. “Obviously, they’re an unbelievable team over there,” he said. “Some of the best players in the world, and when we have a showing like that, playing committed hockey, we can beat anyone in this league.” He added that the result gives the team the belief it needs heading into the rest of the season.
Even Oilers captain Connor McDavid acknowledged Utah’s quality. “I thought they play very well,” he said. “They were solid and have as balanced a lineup as you’re going to see throughout the league. They play four lines, are big, fast. There is a lot to like over there.” McDavid extended his own points streak to seven games and now has 18 points on the season.
Oilers Hampered by Absences
Edmonton’s cause was not helped by their injury situation. The Oilers were missing five starting forwards and a defenceman for the game. Leon Draisaitl and Shakir Mukhamadullin scored for Edmonton, but it was not enough to overcome a determined Utah side. The Oilers fall to 5-1-1 on the season.
The two teams will meet again quickly. They face off in a rematch on Saturday night in Utah, giving the Oilers an early opportunity to respond.
