The Edmonton Elks and Calgary Stampeders meet Monday in the 44th consecutive Labour Day Classic at the iconic McMahon football stadium. Meanwhile, turnover dominance, playoff positioning, and a rushing title race all add weight to one of the CFL’s most storied rivalries.
Turnover Battle Takes Centre Stage
Edmonton enters the game as the CFL’s top turnover-generating team, forcing 33 on the season — including 17 interceptions — and converting those opportunities into 103 points. The Elks hold a plus-14 turnover ratio, the best in the league.

Quarterback Cody Fajardo acknowledged the connection between takeaways and victories on Sunday. “We know in this league, and I’ve been in this league long enough, if you win the turnover battle, you have a chance to win,” he said. Fajardo also noted that Edmonton’s 19 fumbles have held the ratio back, adding that better ball security could push those numbers even higher.
Calgary sits at plus-11 with 26 forced turnovers and 83 points off those plays. Stampeders head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson called the turnover ratio the most important statistic in sports. “If you just look at the turnover ratio, usually that’s going to tell you who won the game,” Dickenson said. “I’ve always said it’s the most important stat in sports.”
Contrasting Strengths Set Up a Strategic Matchup
The game pits two very different team profiles against each other. Calgary leads the CFL with an average of 36.9 points per game on offence, while Edmonton’s defence has surrendered just 25.4 points per game — the lowest average in the league.
Edmonton (8-3) arrives fresh off a bye week and riding back-to-back wins over the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Elks are chasing a third consecutive victory and aiming to protect their lead atop the West Division, with the Saskatchewan Roughriders applying pressure from behind. A win would also keep Edmonton on course to host a home playoff game for the first time in over a decade.
Calgary (5-6) sits in the division basement and needs a strong finish to stay in post-season contention. Elks head coach Mark Kilam kept his focus squarely on the task ahead. “This game means a lot to a lot of people,” Kilam said. “It’s a divisional game, which is important. It’s the next game on our schedule, which is important, and Calgary standing in our way.”
Adams Returns as Stampeders Look to Build Momentum
Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. returns to the lineup Monday after missing the previous game with a head injury sustained August 13 against the B.C. Lions. He practised during the week and received medical clearance ahead of kickoff.
Adams expressed confidence heading into the Labour Day Classic. “No concerns, I feel confident,” he said. “We understand the urgency that we have right now. We control our own destiny. We’ve just got to keep playing our game, owning the ball, stack these wins.” Adams replaces Josh Love, who earned his first CFL starting victory in Calgary’s 28-23 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Week 13.
Fajardo, meanwhile, needs 226 passing yards to reach 25,000 for his career. Both Fajardo and Adams are 10-year CFL veterans who faced each other in the Battle of Alberta for the first time last Labour Day, in their respective first seasons with these clubs.
Rushing Title Race Adds Another Layer
Calgary running back Dedrick Mills delivered the decisive moment against Hamilton, scoring the winning touchdown on a 49-yard run with 29 seconds left. The CFL’s leading rusher in 2025 needs 126 more yards to reach 1,000 for a second straight season, sitting at 874 yards on the year.
Edmonton’s Justin Rankin trails the leaders with 791 yards but remains in contention for the rushing title. Winnipeg’s Brady Oliveira currently leads the category with 956 yards, followed by Mills and Montreal’s Travis Theis at 831. Mills made clear he views every opponent as motivation. “Every running back we play against, I want to be the best in the league,” he said. “We all feel like we’re the best. We just go out here and compete.”
On the injury front, Edmonton receiver T.J. Luther will miss the game with a hamstring injury, and linebacker Kenny Logan Jr. remains sidelined for a third consecutive week with a knee issue. Calgary receiver Reggie Begelton, who has not played since June of last year following knee surgery, practised for a second straight week but the 33-year-old was not activated for Monday’s contest.
