This Sunday, the Saskatchewan Roughriders host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for the Labour Day Classic. Specifically, they will face off at the football stadium in Regina. Notably, this matchup carries extra weight this season. Indeed, it highlights one of the tightest divisional races in recent CFL memory.
In fact, all five West Division teams sit within six points of each other. For example, Edmonton currently leads the division. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg occupy second and third place respectively.
Every Game Counts in a Crowded West Division
The compressed standings have raised the stakes well before the traditional Labour Day turning point of the CFL season. Riders head coach Corey Mace acknowledged the pressure but kept his message straightforward. “Every game is crucial, whether it’s a Western opponent or not,” Mace said. “On Labour Day, this is setting up to be a great game.”

Mace stopped short of declaring these final regular-season games must-win situations, noting that his team approaches every week with the same competitive mindset regardless of the standings. That philosophy aligns with the Riders’ season-long mantra of focusing on going 1-0 each week.
Quarterback Trevor Harris echoed that sense of urgency. “It’s our job to win this game — this is the most important game of the year,” Harris said. “We’re coming off a two-game stretch where we didn’t play our best football, so we’ve got to bear down and make sure we’re playing our best football.” Harris said the key for Saskatchewan is staying true to their identity rather than adjusting their approach for a high-profile opponent. “By being ourselves, not anything new,” he said. “It’s going to be 60 minutes of violent football, and it’s what we look forward to.”
A Rivalry Defined by Close Contests
The Labour Day Classic kicks off a home-and-home series between the two clubs, with the return Banjo Bowl to follow. The recent history between these teams has been remarkably competitive. Winnipeg swept both games in 2024, winning 35-33 and 26-21. Saskatchewan returned the favour in 2025, taking both matchups by scores of 34-30 and 21-13. All four contests were decided by a single score.
Mace expressed deep respect for the Bombers organization and head coach Mike O’Shea. “These two teams have been really good teams and I don’t expect that to change,” he said. “We’ve got crazy respect for this team and what they’ve been able to do in the past.”
Players to Watch Heading Into Sunday
Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros enters the game in strong form. In his most recent outing on August 28, Collaros threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-32 completions in a 44-28 win over the Montreal Alouettes. That performance came in his 150th career start, lifting his career record to 93-57, including 59-25 with Winnipeg.
On the Saskatchewan side, receiver KeeSean Johnson stands just 10 yards short of 1,000 receiving yards for the season entering Sunday’s game. Johnson currently ranks third in the CFL in receiving yards after finishing 2025 with 1,159 yards on 86 receptions. Against Toronto last week, he caught 10 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown.
That victory over the Argonauts was itself a notable performance by the Riders, who overcame a 15-point deficit to win 28-24. It marked Saskatchewan’s largest comeback win since a September 29, 2017 game against the Ottawa Redblacks, when the Riders trailed 17-0 before winning 18-17.
