The Winnipeg Blue Bombers silenced their doubters with a commanding 44-28 victory over the Montreal Alouettes on Friday night, delivering what many inside the locker room called their most complete performance of the 2026 CFL season. The win came in front of a sold-out crowd at Princess Auto Stadium and snapped Montreal’s impressive seven-game winning streak.
Bombers Answer the Critics
Winnipeg entered the game having lost three of their previous four contests, carrying a 5-5 record and facing growing skepticism about their Grey Cup credentials. A victory over the league’s hottest team changed that conversation quickly. Running back Brady Oliveira, who rushed 13 times for 84 yards and scored a touchdown, summed up the mood in the aftermath.

“We needed that one, man,” Oliveira said. “We’ve had some really tight games, games that haven’t gone our way. I just feel like we’ve been on the short end of it a little bit this year.” He later added, “I would say it was our most complete game of the year. We learned from the mistakes last week and throughout this entire season. Just proud of the guys.”
The victory lifts Winnipeg to 6-5 and moves them into third place in the West Division, ahead of the B.C. Lions at 5-5 and just behind the second-place Saskatchewan Roughriders at 6-4. Head coach Mike O’Shea acknowledged there is still work to do but allowed himself a moment to appreciate the result.
“There are always things to correct, but we should enjoy this one tonight,” O’Shea said. “I’ve been saying that we’re close. We’re getting closer and closer and it’s down to the more finite details. Tonight, the guys were pretty damn good.”
Collaros and Wilson Lead Offensive Explosion
Quarterback Zach Collaros made his third consecutive start since returning from a neck injury and delivered a sharp performance. He completed 26 of 32 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns. The Bombers racked up 447 net yards of total offence on the night.
Wide receiver Ontaria Wilson was the standout performer, hauling in nine receptions for 114 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Running back Bryce Perkins added two rushing majors, while kicker Sergio Castillo contributed three field goals from 51, 43 and 20 yards respectively.
Collaros highlighted a pivotal special teams moment that shifted the game’s momentum in the second half. Winnipeg blocked a Montreal punt deep in Alouettes territory to open the third quarter, and Perkins scored on the very next play to push the lead to 31-21. “Huge,” Collaros said of the punt block. “Our special teams has been great all season long. Any time you can have a momentum swing like that, it’s massive.”
Montreal Struggles to Find Its Footing
The Alouettes fall to 9-2 but retain a comfortable four-game lead atop the East Division over the Toronto Argonauts at 5-5. Despite the standings cushion, Friday’s performance exposed some uncharacteristic weaknesses for Montreal.
Quarterback Davis Alexander threw for 257 yards on 20-of-31 passing and connected for three touchdown passes to Tyler Snead and one to Tyson Philpot. However, Alexander briefly left the game with a lower-body injury and was unavailable for post-game interviews. The loss was only the second of his career, dropping him to 21-2.
Montreal’s offence managed just 284 net yards, a season low, and lost the turnover battle 3-1. Running back Travis Theis, who had averaged more than 100 rushing yards over the previous six games and scored in seven of his last eight, managed only 31 yards on eight carries and failed to reach the end zone.
Alouettes head coach Jason Maas kept a measured tone after the defeat. “We don’t call games losses; it’s a learning opportunity for us,” he said. “It will be a hard ride home. We’ll all take it to heart.” Wide receiver Tyler Snead, who caught three touchdown passes, offered a candid assessment of Winnipeg. “You respect every team and Winnipeg is a known team, especially the last few years. You know what you’re going to get from them — they’re going to play fast, they’re going to play physical, and they’re going to be disciplined. They did all three of those things tonight.”
What Comes Next
The two clubs wasted no time in the first half, combining for five touchdowns and 35 points in the opening 20 minutes. Winnipeg held a narrow 24-21 lead at halftime before pulling away steadily in the second half. Wilson’s second touchdown extended the lead to 44-21 late in the fourth quarter, with Snead adding a consolation score in the final two minutes.
The Bombers will look to build on this result quickly. They face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on the road on Sunday, September 6, in the first of back-to-back matchups against their West Division rivals. Oliveira believes the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ dominant victory over Montreal provides exactly the kind of momentum the team needs heading into that stretch. The Alouettes, meanwhile, return home to host the B.C. Lions on Friday, September 4.
