Actor Busy Philipps has publicly shared details of a rare brain tumor diagnosis, revealing that she underwent two separate surgeries after a routine full-body scan detected a malignant growth inside her brain. The 47-year-old, known for her roles in Freaks and Geeks and Dawson’s Creek, described the past six months as the most surreal of her life, while expressing relief at having survived the ordeal.
A Routine Scan That Changed Everything
Philipps told People magazine in a cover story interview that she first learned about the Prenuvo scan — a full-body MRI capable of screening for more than 500 conditions — through Instagram. She said she felt an unexplained urge to book the appointment, despite having no specific symptoms prompting concern.
Originally scheduled for January, the scan was delayed after a blizzard pushed her appointment to February 12 — the day after her Dawson’s Creek co-star James Van Der Beek died of cancer. Following the scan, her doctor identified a lesion on her brain and immediately recommended a follow-up MRI.
A neurologist then delivered the news directly: “This is a real tumour, and it’s inside your brain. And Busy, it’s got to come out.” Philipps said the confirmation left her “hyperventilating and trying to breathe.”

Diagnosis and First Surgery
Doctors diagnosed Philipps with a Grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare and slow-growing primary central nervous system tumor. According to the National Cancer Institute, these low-grade tumors can develop for years before detection because they often produce no symptoms.
Surgeons removed the 2.6-centimeter mass during a five-hour procedure on March 2. Her neuro-oncologist, Dr. John Golfinos, told People that early detection significantly improved her outcome. Had she waited until seizures appeared, the tumor “would have been two or three times the size” and “might have been much harder to take the whole thing out,” he said.
The discovery came just weeks before Philipps was scheduled to begin filming her new television series, Cupertino. She called herself “the luckiest girl in the world” and said she remains “grateful that I’m alive.”
A Second Surgery After Complications
Philipps’ recovery did not proceed without setbacks. Approximately one month after her first operation, her dermatologist noticed the incision site during a Botox appointment and flagged it as abnormal, refusing to proceed with the treatment.
A wound care specialist subsequently determined that Philipps had contracted a staphylococcus infection at the incision site. She required a second surgery on April 27 to clear the infection. During that procedure, surgeons also removed one of the small titanium tacks placed in her skull during the first operation to hold the bone in place.
“Fortunately, we got to it early, so it wasn’t a deep infection,” Dr. Golfinos said. Philipps had also been placed on antibiotics prior to the second procedure.
Telling Her Children and Reflecting on the Experience
Philipps said one of the hardest moments was telling her two children — Birdie, 18, and Cricket, 13 — about the diagnosis. She described Birdie as “kind of beside herself and really, really scared and overwhelmed with emotion.”
To reassure her eldest, Philipps told her: “Birdie, you’re just not in the movie where your mom dies your senior year of high school. That’s just not the movie that you’re in. I promise you.” Cricket’s response, she recalled, was calmer — accepting her mother’s assurance that everything would be fine.
Reflecting on the broader experience, Philipps urged others not to dismiss their instincts when something feels wrong. “We are frequently told by doctors that there is nothing to worry about when you kind of know that there’s something to worry about,” she said. She added that seeking information is never something to fear. “There’s nothing to be afraid of in having information. It’s only empowering.”
According to the National Cancer Institute, the most common early sign of an oligodendroglioma is a seizure, with around 60 percent of patients experiencing one before receiving a diagnosis. Other symptoms can include headaches, memory and thinking difficulties, weakness, numbness, and problems with balance and movement. The Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada notes that the condition appears most frequently in adults in their 20s to 40s, though it can also affect children.
