Scottie Barnes delivered the best scoring performance of his NBA career on Friday night, but it was not enough to secure a win for the Toronto Raptors. Orlando Magic defeated Toronto 121-114 in the opening NBA Cup game for both teams.
Barnes Sets Career Record in Losing Effort
Barnes finished with a career-high 41 points, adding five rebounds and five assists. However, Orlando’s balanced offensive attack proved too much for the Raptors to overcome. The loss dropped Toronto to 3-2 on the season.

The result marked a sharp turnaround for the Magic, who had suffered a lopsided 129-99 defeat to the Raptors just two days earlier on Wednesday. Orlando improved to 2-3 with the victory.
Magic’s Balanced Attack Powers Win
Desmond Bane led Orlando with 28 points, connecting on six of 12 three-point attempts. His shooting anchored a dominant night from beyond the arc. As a team, the Magic shot 18 for 34 from three-point range, a remarkable 53 per cent.
Franz Wagner contributed 26 points and 11 assists for Orlando. Anthony Black also recorded a double-double, finishing with 17 points and 10 assists. Together, they gave the Magic multiple reliable offensive weapons throughout the game.
For Toronto, Immanuel Quickley added 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Starting centre Jakob Poeltl had his strongest game of the season. He entered Friday averaging just 2.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, but finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.
Key Moment and Notable Absence
Toronto came close to forcing a comeback late in the fourth quarter. Reserve forward Jamison Battle converted a layup with 6:07 remaining, cutting Orlando’s lead to just two points. However, the Magic responded immediately with a 5-0 run to push the lead back out and secure control of the game.
Kawhi Leonard missed the contest due to left knee swelling. Ja’Kobe Walter started in his place and scored nine points.
Barnes Joins Raptors History
Despite the defeat, Barnes’s performance earned him a place in franchise history. His 41-point outing was his 16th career game with at least 30 points, five rebounds and five assists. That total ties him with DeMar DeRozan for fourth most in Raptors history.
Toronto now travels to Los Angeles, where the Raptors face the Lakers on Sunday and the Clippers on Monday. Meanwhile, Orlando hosts the Boston Celtics on Sunday afternoon.
