Three ministers from British Columbia Premier David Eby’s NDP cabinet have now announced they will not seek re-election in the upcoming provincial election, scheduled for October 24.
Health Minister Ravi Kahlon became the latest to step aside. In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, Kahlon said he believes it is the right time “for the next champion of North Delta to step forward and carry this work on.” His announcement follows similar decisions by two other cabinet colleagues.

Three Ministers Step Back from the Race
Ministers Kelly Greene and Lana Popham had previously announced they would not be running. Greene cited serious concerns about the NDP-backed Tilbury LNG facility and the risks it poses to waterways in and around her riding of Richmond-Steveston. Her decision reflected a direct conflict between her environmental concerns and her party’s position.
Popham, meanwhile, expressed a different sentiment. She said she was sad to leave her role but looks forward to contributing in other ways. Her departure was less tied to policy disagreement and more to a personal decision about her future.
Snap Election Called One Week After Municipal Vote
Premier Eby called the snap election for October 24. The date falls just one week after the municipal election on October 17. The decision to call an early election drew attention, given that the BC NDP already holds a majority government.
The departures of three experienced cabinet ministers before the vote represent a notable shift in the NDP’s lineup heading into the campaign. Each minister offered a distinct reason for stepping back. Together, however, their announcements signal a significant change in the party’s roster at a critical time.
As the October 24 election approaches, the BC NDP will need to identify strong candidates to fill the gaps left by Kahlon, Greene, and Popham. Their ridings will now require new standard-bearers to carry the party’s message forward during the campaign.
