A British Columbia driver turned a routine outing into a life-saving act after he helped rescue a man from an armed attacker at Redwood Park in South Surrey on Wednesday afternoon.
Local photographer Robin Nuber captured the entire incident on video. According to Surrey police, the attack began just before 5 p.m. The suspect, later identified as Richard Mark James Evoy, allegedly drove his Jeep Wrangler into the victim’s Ford pickup truck. The victim then tried to flee on foot. Evoy allegedly pursued him while armed with a knife.

Driver Steps In During the Attack
Nuber was filming the scene from his car when the situation escalated rapidly. As the victim ran toward his vehicle, Nuber began reversing to create an escape route. The victim reached the car and climbed in before Evoy could close the distance.
“In that moment, I’m filming, I’m reversing my car and I’m trying to unlock my car — all in that same moment, he opens my door,” Nuber told Global News. He added that the victim held on as he reversed. “I probably could have given him another minute to get in, but as you see, I pan up and he’s at the front of my car and I just started reversing and he held on for dear life.”
Nuber kept the victim safe until police officers arrived at the scene.
Suspect Faces Multiple Charges
Evoy, 37, now faces several charges, including assault with a weapon and criminal harassment. Surrey Police Service Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said the video makes clear why the suspect faces so many charges.
“Certainly you can hear in the voice of the individual in the video that there is some significant concern around what that person sees unfolding in front of them,” Houghton said. He also noted that the scene was far from ordinary. “That’s not something you come across every day driving around a park in South Surrey.”
Police believe the suspect and the victim know each other. The investigation remains ongoing.
Meanwhile, Nuber’s quick thinking drew widespread attention after the video circulated online. His decision to stay calm and act quickly likely prevented a far more serious outcome for the victim.
