The Winnipeg Blue Bombers delivered a commanding performance at Princess Auto Stadium on Friday night, defeating the CFL-leading Montreal Alouettes 44-28 in front of a sold-out crowd. The victory snapped a troubling stretch for Winnipeg, which had lost three of its previous four games, and extended the Bombers’ winning streak against Montreal to three straight contests dating back to last season.
Bombers Silence Doubters With Complete Team Effort
Few observers gave Winnipeg much of a chance heading into the matchup. Montreal entered the game riding a seven-game winning streak with a dominant 9-1 record, while the Bombers were still reeling from a painful 22-19 road loss to the Edmonton Elks the week before — a game in which they squandered a 16-0 lead.

The win pushed Winnipeg’s record to 6-5 and kept the club firmly in the West Division playoff race. The Bombers sit third in the standings, ahead of the B.C. Lions at 5-5 and just behind the second-place Saskatchewan Roughriders at 6-4. Montreal, meanwhile, dropped to 9-2 and missed a chance to clinch a playoff berth before the weekend ended.
Collaros and Wilson Lead the Offensive Charge
Quarterback Zach Collaros continued his strong return from a neck injury, completing 26 of 32 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns in his third consecutive start. The Bombers piled up 447 net yards of total offence on the night.
Wide receiver Ontaria Wilson was the standout performer, hauling in nine receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Brady Oliveira added 84 yards on 13 carries, while Bryce Perkins scored twice on the ground and Oliveira added a rushing major of his own. Kicker Sergio Castillo rounded out the scoring with three field goals from 51, 43 and 20 yards. Castillo’s 51-yard effort extended his own CFL record for most field goals of 50 or more yards, now standing at 43.
Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander threw for 257 yards on 20-of-31 passing, connecting for three touchdowns with Tyler Snead and one with Tyson Philpot. Despite the solid individual numbers, it marked only the second loss of Alexander’s career, dropping him to 21-2. Philpot now leads all CFL receivers with 10 touchdowns, six of which have come in his last three games.
Turnovers and Special Teams Swing the Game
Winnipeg controlled the turnover battle 3-1, a margin that proved decisive. Montreal’s offence managed just 284 net yards — a season low — and running back Travis Theis, who had averaged more than 100 rushing yards over his previous six games and scored in seven of his last eight, managed only 31 yards on eight carries without reaching the end zone.
The Bombers struck quickly, scoring on the game’s opening nine-play drive when Perkins punched it in from one yard out. A successful pass interference challenge helped set up the score, moving the ball from Winnipeg’s 43-yard line to Montreal’s 32. It marked the team’s first first-quarter touchdown since a 30-21 win over the Toronto Argonauts back in Week 6.
After Montreal briefly tied the game at 7-7, the two teams traded scores through the second quarter. Winnipeg led 24-21 at halftime, though not without some late drama. With under 45 seconds left in the half, Alouettes defensive back Nate Beauchemin stripped the ball from receiver Tommy Nield inches from the end zone, and teammate Kabion Ento recovered the fumble to keep the deficit at three.
Winnipeg’s special teams unit responded emphatically to open the second half, blocking a Montreal punt deep in the Alouettes’ end. Perkins scored on the very next play to push the lead to 31-21. Another Winnipeg fumble recovery set up a Castillo field goal that made it 34-21 after three quarters. He added a 20-yarder early in the fourth to push the margin to 16 points. Wilson’s second touchdown sealed the outcome at 44-21, before Snead added a late consolation score for Montreal.
What Comes Next for Both Teams
The Alouettes return home to host the B.C. Lions on Friday, September 4. The Blue Bombers, buoyed by their biggest win of the season, travel to Saskatchewan to face the Roughriders on Sunday, September 6, in a critical West Division showdown.
