Bylaw officers in Fort McMurray, Alberta, have rescued 97 small-breed dogs from a private residence after executing a search warrant, in what officials describe as one of the largest animal rescues the community has ever seen.
Search Warrant Leads to Mass Dog Rescue
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo confirmed that bylaw officers carried out the operation at the Fort McMurray home on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Officers discovered all 97 dogs living inside the property. Charges are now pending against a person who was present at the residence at the time.

Bylaw Services Manager Aaron Anderson said the scale of the rescue stands out in the region’s history. Authorities transferred all of the animals into the care of the Fort McMurray SPCA following the operation.
SPCA Urges Public to Be Patient
The Fort McMurray SPCA is now responsible for the welfare of all 97 rescued dogs. The organization acknowledged public interest in the animals but asked the community to allow staff the time and space needed to properly care for them.
“We understand that everyone is curious and wants to see the new arrivals,” the SPCA wrote in a Facebook post on Friday. “But allowing people to come in and visit right now would add additional stress and make it much more difficult for our team to focus on getting 97 animals safely settled and cared for.”
The SPCA said it will notify the public when the dogs become available for adoption.
Medical Care and Long Road to Adoption
The municipality confirmed that each dog requires a full medical examination. This process may include vaccinations, spaying and neutering. Officials warned that it could take several months before any of the animals are ready to move into new homes.
The sheer number of dogs involved makes this Fort McMurray dog rescue a significant logistical challenge for local animal welfare services. Staff are working to ensure every animal receives the individual attention it needs before any adoption process begins.
Municipality Encourages Responsible Pet Ownership
In the wake of the rescue, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo urged residents to report any concerns about animal welfare in their communities. Officials also addressed pet owners who may be struggling to provide adequate care for their animals.
The municipality encouraged those in difficult situations to consider rehoming their pets. “If you are unable to rehome your animal, bylaw services can help,” officials stated. “Surrendering a pet is an understandably difficult decision, but it’s an important step to ensure an animal’s well-being.”
Authorities did not release further details about the individual facing pending charges in connection with the case.
