A Mexican Influencer Livestream Shooting has left popular TikTok creator Cesar Gastelum dead in the northwestern city of Culiacán. Authorities confirmed the fatal attack after gunmen opened fire while Gastelum streamed live outside a fast-food restaurant with friends. The incident has renewed concerns about organized crime and the growing risks facing social media personalities in Mexico.
Gastelum had nearly 600,000 followers on TikTok. He built a large audience by sharing comedy sketches and humorous videos. His sudden death shocked followers and added another high-profile case to Mexico’s ongoing violence.
Gunmen Attacked During Live Broadcast
According to footage reviewed by Reuters, two men arrived on a motorcycle while Gastelum was livestreaming outside the restaurant. Moments later, they appeared to fire directly at him before fleeing the scene.
Local officials in Sinaloa confirmed Gastelum’s death shortly after the shooting. Authorities immediately launched an investigation and increased security in the surrounding area.
Investigators have not announced any arrests or identified a possible motive. However, they continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses.

Violence Continues to Grip Culiacán
The attack occurred as Culiacán faces another wave of violence linked to organized crime. Rival criminal groups continue to fight for control of territory across the city.
For years, Culiacán has remained one of Mexico’s most dangerous cities because of cartel activity. Consequently, residents and businesses regularly face heightened security concerns.
Officials have not confirmed whether the shooting directly relates to the ongoing criminal conflict. Nevertheless, investigators continue to examine every possible lead.
Another Influencer Killed in Mexico
Gastelum’s killing follows the May 2025 murder of Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Márquez. She also died during a TikTok livestream while working at her beauty salon in Jalisco.
Prosecutors said a gunman entered the salon and opened fire. Authorities investigated her death under Mexico’s femicide protocols because the circumstances met legal criteria for gender-related violence.
At the time of her death, Márquez had approximately 200,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok. Her murder sparked widespread outrage throughout Mexico and beyond.
In July, authorities arrested Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known as “El R-1.” Security Minister Omar García Harfuch identified him as the leader of a criminal group linked to the Jalisco cartel and Márquez’s murder. Authorities also accused him of ordering the assassination of a mayor in Michoacán.
Rising Concerns Over Public Safety
Mexico continues to struggle with high levels of organized crime and violent attacks. Public figures, journalists, politicians, and online creators increasingly face serious security risks.
Meanwhile, gender-based violence also remains a major concern. According to the latest figures from the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia recorded the region’s fourth-highest femicide rate in 2023. Each country reported 1.3 femicide deaths for every 100,000 women.
The killing of Cesar Gastelum highlights the dangers that extend beyond traditional public life. As authorities continue their investigation, many observers have renewed calls for stronger security measures and greater protection for content creators and other public figures across Mexico.
