Experimenter, one of India’s most internationally connected art galleries, has grown steadily since its founding in Kolkata in 2009. Prateek Raja and Priyanka Raja established the gallery with a clear focus on alternative artistic practices, including photography, film, mixed media, and found objects. Over the past decade and a half, Experimenter has built a strong reputation both at home and on the global art circuit.
A Kolkata Gallery With Global Reach
Kolkata sits outside India’s main art market centres of Mumbai and Delhi. However, Experimenter has addressed this challenge directly. The gallery maintains an aggressive presence at leading international art fairs, including Art Basel in Basel and Hong Kong, Frieze London, Frieze New York, and FIAC in Paris.

Both founders also hold influential positions within the global art world. Prateek currently serves on the selection committee for Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland. Meanwhile, Priyanka holds the same role at Art Dubai. These positions have helped Experimenter punch well above its weight on the international stage.
Expanding Across India
The gallery has grown its physical presence significantly over the years. In 2018, Experimenter opened a second space in Kolkata. Then, in 2022, it expanded further by launching a location in Mumbai.
Most recently, in 2025, the gallery added a third Kolkata outpost in a particularly striking setting. The new space sits inside the historic Alipore Jail, a colonial-era facility that has since been renovated and repurposed as a cultural centre. The choice of location reflects the gallery’s commitment to engaging with history and context in its programming.
Curators, Artists and the Biennale
Beyond exhibitions, Experimenter has organised a Curator’s Hub since 2010. The initiative has attracted some of the most respected names in contemporary curating, including Doryun Chong, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Adam Szymczyk, and Naomi Beckwith.
The gallery’s artist roster brings together a diverse range of South Asian and diaspora voices. These include Naeem Mohamien, Sanchayan Ghosh, Sakshi Gupta, Prabhakar Pachpute, Pushpakanthan Pakkiyarajah, and Sohrab Hura. Notably, Hura will participate in the 2026 Venice Biennale, further raising the gallery’s international profile.
Experimenter is located at 2/1 Hindustan Road, Dover Terrace, Ballygunge, Kolkata, West Bengal 700019, India. For those interested in India’s contemporary art scene, it remains one of the country’s most essential destinations.
