Leon Draisaitl and Shakir Mukhamadullin scored for Edmonton, which fell to 5-1-1. Devon Levi made 20 saves for the Oilers, who were also dealing with significant absences. Edmonton entered the game without five starting forwards and a defenceman.
A Key Moment Swings the Game
Edmonton briefly cut the deficit in the second period. Draisaitl scored at 13:54 to make it a one-goal game. However, just 23 seconds later, Vincent Trocheck fed the puck in front to a hard-charging Cooley, who redirected it past Levi. That goal restored Utah’s two-goal lead at 3-1 and effectively ended Edmonton’s comeback bid.
Cooley’s goal was his first of the season. Meanwhile, Hayton also scored his first of the year and extended his points streak to five games. Utah matched the offer sheet the New Jersey Devils tendered for Hayton in the off-season, and the forward has rewarded that decision with consistent production early in the campaign.
McDavid Extends Points Streak Despite Loss
Despite the defeat, Connor McDavid continued his remarkable start to the season. He picked up an assist on Thursday, extending his season-opening points streak to seven games. McDavid now has four goals and 14 assists for 18 points, the best start of his NHL career and the most points in the league so far this season.
Before Thursday, Edmonton held a dominant all-time record against Utah. The Oilers entered the game with a 5-0-1 mark against the Mammoth and had outscored them 31-16 overall. At home specifically, Edmonton was 3-0-0 against Utah, outscoring them 17-5. The Mammoth’s win therefore carries added significance as a statement result on the road.
Rematch Set for Saturday
The two teams will meet again quickly. They face off Saturday night in Utah, giving the Oilers an early opportunity to respond. Edmonton will hope to have some of its injured forwards back in the lineup for that contest.
