A Canadian mountaineer and skyrunner has gone missing in the Alps while attempting to break a mountain-running record on the Matterhorn, the peak straddling the border between Switzerland and Italy. Athletics Canada confirmed the disappearance of Kalie McCrystal, who was last seen on Tuesday during her climb of the iconic mountain.
Experienced Climber Vanishes on the Matterhorn
The Matterhorn rises approximately 4,481 metres above sea level, its distinctive horn-shaped summit overlooking the Swiss town of Zermatt. Athletics Canada noted in an official statement that McCrystal had previously climbed the mountain and brought extensive experience in technical, high-altitude environments to the attempt.

“This was therefore not her first ascent of the mountain,” the governing body stated. The organization did not disclose details about the specific record McCrystal was pursuing at the time of her disappearance.
Athletics Canada Calls for Safe Return
Athletics Canada described McCrystal as a highly respected figure within the global skyrunning community. The organization expressed its support for those affected by the situation and acknowledged the efforts of search teams working in the area.
“Our thoughts are with Kalie, her family and everyone close to her at this extremely difficult time,” the statement read. “We are hoping for her safe return and are grateful to those involved in the ongoing search.”
Friends Describe a Passionate and Inspiring Athlete
Riley Webb, a close friend of McCrystal from her hometown of Squamish, British Columbia, spoke to Global News about the missing athlete. He said he has known her for roughly five years and described her as an accomplished mountain runner, a practicing lawyer, and a deeply compassionate person.
“She was very thoughtful and compassionate. Always there for you. Truly always there for you,” Webb said. He added that the uncertainty surrounding the search has been deeply painful for those in her inner circle. “As a friend and someone very close to her, it’s almost unbearable.”
Webb and McCrystal began trail and mountain running around the same time, often training together and heading into the mountains as a pair. He highlighted her dedication to the sport and her commitment to championing women in mountain running as qualities that set her apart.
“I think she was a very inspiring person,” he said. Search efforts for Kalie McCrystal are ongoing in the Matterhorn region.
