Graham Voth, a parent shopping at Value Village in Winnipeg, expressed frustration shared by many families this season. “I’m so tired of hearing about the rising costs. I mean, it sucks, but we all have to deal with it,” he said.
Bargain retailers across the city have seen increased foot traffic from parents looking to stretch their dollars further. The combination of persistent inflation and the high per-child cost of school preparation has pushed many families toward discount and second-hand shopping options.
Community Organization Steps Up to Help
One organization working to ease the burden is Tru-North Supply, which produces affordable back-to-school backpack kits for children in northern communities. The group has seen a notable rise in interest this year.
Danica Lazatin, sales and marketing co-ordinator at Tru-North Supply, confirmed the organization filled 400 backpacks during the current season. The increased demand reflects a broader trend of families and communities seeking support as school preparation costs continue to climb.
Classes Set to Begin September 9
Students in Winnipeg are scheduled to return to class on September 9. With that date approaching, families are making final purchases and organizations like Tru-North Supply are working to ensure children in underserved communities have what they need to start the school year prepared.
