LOS ANGELES — Sean Combs Netflix dispute escalates as the mogul’s legal team sends a cease-and-desist letter to Netflix. The letter demands the streaming giant halt release of Sean Combs: The Reckoning, a docuseries produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. Combs’ attorneys claim the series uses “stolen footage” without authorization.
Contested Footage and Legal Claims
Combs’ spokesperson Juda Engelmayer told CNN the footage in Netflix’s official trailer was part of Combs’ decades-long effort to document his own life. Engelmayer explained the footage, filmed six days before Combs’ September 2024 arrest, was commissioned for Combs’ personal documentary project.
“Sean has been filming himself since age 19 to tell his own story,” Engelmayer said. “It is fundamentally unfair and illegal for Netflix to misappropriate that work.”
Netflix’s director, Alexandra Stapleton, responded that the production team obtained all footage legally and secured necessary rights. Stapleton added the team repeatedly attempted to contact Combs’ legal representatives for interviews, without success.
Cease-and-Desist and Historical Context
In the letter, Combs’ attorneys threatened further legal action, citing the mogul’s history of defending his rights against media entities. Previously, Combs filed a $100 million defamation lawsuit against NBCUniversal over a Peacock documentary, Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy.
Combs’ statement also criticized Netflix for working with Jackson, describing him as “a longtime adversary with a personal vendetta who has spent too much time slandering Mr. Combs.”

Legal Troubles and Prison Sentence
Combs is currently serving a 50-month sentence following convictions on two counts of transporting individuals to engage in prostitution. He was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges. Combs has appealed his sentence and requested consideration for a presidential pardon.
Additionally, Combs faces around 70 civil lawsuits, mostly alleging sexual assault and misconduct, some involving minors. Combs denies all claims, and some cases have been dismissed.
Social Media Tensions
Jackson continues to publicly taunt Combs on Instagram, fueling tensions ahead of the docuseries release. Meanwhile, Combs’ legal team emphasizes protecting his intellectual property and personal narrative.
