The NDP leadership race 2026 officially launched Tuesday as the New Democratic Party announced key dates and deadlines for members and candidates. Party members will choose the next federal leader from March 27 to March 29, 2026, with results revealed at the Winnipeg convention on March 29.
Key dates and rules for candidates
The party confirmed that anyone wishing to vote must register as a new NDP member before January 28, 2026. Candidates who want to appear on the ballot must file their papers by January 31, 2026. According to the party, strong interest already exists among grassroots members since application packages became available last month.
NDP president highlights opportunity
NDP president Mary Shortall described the leadership contest as a chance to build momentum after the party’s recent struggles.
“This leadership race is an exciting opportunity for our members and for people across the country who share progressive values,” Shortall said. She added that the process will encourage “important conversations about the future we want to build together, rooted in fairness, justice, and hope.”
Background on Singh’s resignation
The NDP launched the race after former leader Jagmeet Singh announced on April 28 that he would step down. His decision followed the party’s worst federal election result in years. The NDP captured only seven seats, and Singh lost his Burnaby South riding in British Columbia. On May 5, Vancouver Kingsway MP Don Davies assumed the role of interim leader.
Grassroots involvement across Canada
To keep members engaged, the party updated its official leadership website. Electoral District Associations, youth groups, and activists can now share local events linked to the contest. Organizers say the leadership race will remain democratic and inclusive, reflecting the party’s values of fairness and justice.
Looking ahead to Winnipeg 2026
With voting scheduled for late March 2026, the NDP leadership race 2026 promises to shape the future direction of Canada’s progressive movement. Party members and candidates now prepare for an active and closely watched contest that will culminate at the Winnipeg convention.
