VATICAN CITY — A wave of jubilation swept through St. Peter’s Square on Thursday as white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of a new pope to lead the Catholic Church.
Shortly after 12 p.m. ET, thousands of faithful gathered in the square erupted into cheers as the iconic plume of white smoke emerged, marking the successful conclusion of the conclave of cardinals. Moments later, the bells of St. Peter’s Basilica rang out, confirming the decision.
The identity of the new pontiff remains under wraps for now. Traditionally, the senior cardinal deacon will soon appear on the central balcony of the basilica to deliver the historic announcement: “Habemus Papam!” — Latin for “We have a pope!” The cardinal will then reveal the pope’s birth name as well as the papal name he has chosen.
Following the formal declaration, the new pope is expected to make his first appearance before the world and offer the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing to the city and the world.
The election comes just over two weeks after the passing of Pope Francis, who died on April 21 at the age of 88. His 12-year papacy was marked by efforts to modernize the Church and emphasize global humanitarian issues.
The new pontiff steps into one of the most influential roles in global religion, assuming spiritual leadership of over 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide. His election ushers in a new chapter for a Church navigating modern challenges, shifting geopolitics, and growing secularism in many parts of the world.
As anticipation builds, all eyes now turn to the basilica balcony for the announcement that will define the Church’s future direction.
