Mat Leave Moms, a thriving social group in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), was created to help mothers connect and support each other during maternity leave. Over time, it has evolved into a welcoming community for moms at all stages of parenthood.
“Our focus is on fun and social connections,” says Shannon Lynn, one of the group’s founders. “Most importantly, we just want to help moms get out of the house.”
Lynn and her friend first experienced the isolation of maternity leave in March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic made socializing nearly impossible. However, it wasn’t until they had their second children that the idea for Mat Leave Moms was born.
“We found ourselves on maternity leave again, wanting to meet other moms but not knowing many,” Lynn recalls. “One day, we just had this spontaneous idea, and it took off.”
The group gained rapid popularity after Lynn created an Instagram profile, quickly attracting mothers eager to find community and support. For many, the transition to motherhood can feel overwhelming, and having a network makes a world of difference.
“It’s been a long winter, and getting out, meeting other moms, and sharing experiences has been amazing,” says Anna Jacquart, a new mom who welcomed her baby in January.
A typical Mat Leave Moms outing includes a walk or hike around HRM, followed by a stop at a local café for a warm drink and conversation.
“We constantly hear from moms about how much this group has impacted their lives,” Lynn says.
At its core, Mat Leave Moms is all about fostering friendships, encouraging socialization, and embracing their simple yet powerful motto:
“Get out of the house.”
