A bridge collapse in Brazil has resulted in a tragic loss of life and a significant chemical spill into a river. The incident occurred on Sunday when the 533-meter Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge, connecting the northeastern cities of Estreito and Aguiarnópolis, gave way.
Adding to the disaster, the trucks were carrying approximately 25,000 liters of pesticides and 76 tons of sulfuric acid. This has raised serious concerns about environmental contamination, and authorities have issued warnings against using the river water for drinking or bathing. Search efforts for the missing were temporarily halted due to the presence of sulfuric acid in the water, according to CNN Brazil.
The National Department of Transport Infrastructure has launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. The Brazilian Navy will also deploy resources to assist in the ongoing search for the 13 missing individuals.
The government has further announced plans to contract a company to design and build a replacement bridge, with an estimated completion time of approximately one year.
