A Toronto police shooting early Thursday left an officer fighting for their life after an exchange of gunfire broke out while authorities were carrying out a search warrant in the city’s west end.
According to a statement posted on X by Toronto Police Operations, officers were conducting the warrant near Trethewey and Black Creek drives when gunfire erupted at approximately 5:42 a.m. One officer was struck and rushed to hospital in an emergency transport, the force said.
A spokesperson for Toronto Paramedic Services told Global News that two individuals were taken to hospital, both in serious, life-threatening condition. The identity of the second person involved in the Toronto police shooting was not immediately confirmed, and no suspect details have been released.
Heavy Police Presence at the Scene
A large contingent of officers was seen at 15 Martha Eaton Way, an apartment complex close to the intersection where the incident unfolded. Police were also stationed at Sunnybrook Hospital, where the emergency department entrance had been cordoned off with tape.
Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has launched an investigation into the events surrounding the Toronto police shooting, a spokesperson confirmed to Global News. The SIU routinely steps in when police actions result in serious injury or death.

Residents Express Fear and Frustration
Several people living in the building said the violence had left them deeply unsettled, noting that the neighbourhood has experienced gun violence before.
“It’s not the first time: last year a little boy got shot,” one resident said.
That tragedy refers to eight-year-old JahVai Roy, who was killed on Aug. 16, 2025, when stray bullets pierced his bedroom. The young boy was lying in bed beside his mother when shots were fired outside their home around 12:30 a.m. Three teenagers were later arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with his death.
Investigation Continues
As the SIU works to piece together what happened during the Toronto police shooting, details remain limited. Authorities have not disclosed whether anyone is in custody, nor have they provided information about the circumstances that led to the gunfire.
The incident has reignited concerns about public safety in the area, where residents say repeated episodes of violence have eroded their sense of security. Community members continue to call for greater protection and intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted directly to investigators or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
This is a developing story, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
