Peter Maher, the iconic radio voice of the Calgary Flames, has died at 79. Maher’s legendary broadcasts spanned more than three decades, from 1980 until his retirement after the 2013‑14 NHL season. He was behind the microphone when the Flames captured their only Stanley Cup in 1989 and called more than 3,100 consecutive games.
“Peter’s legacy extends well beyond the broadcast booth. He was a passionate ambassador for the Calgary Flames, a devoted member of the community and a person whose warmth, generosity and love for the game touched countless lives,” the team said in a statement Thursday.
At his 2014 retirement news conference, Maher reflected: “It’s better to leave something you love too early, rather than too late.” He added, “I’ve been blessed to not miss an NHL play‑by‑play assignment after over 3,100 games. For that, I’m grateful.”
Born in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Maher earned a place in the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame as a media honouree in 2006, winning the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award. He is also a member of both the New Brunswick and Alberta Sports Halls of Fame. In 2010, he called the men’s hockey tournament at the Vancouver Olympics for Sportsnet. Fans will forever remember his signature calls — “Yeah baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” — shouted after every Flames victory.
