York Regional Police (YRP) are investigating two separate hate-motivated incidents in Vaughan and are appealing to the public for information as community concern grows.
On Thursday, May 8, officers responded to a park near Bathurst Street and Major Mackenzie Drive West after reports of antisemitic graffiti. A swastika had been spraypainted on the sidewalk. Authorities say the graffiti was promptly removed and the case is being investigated as a hate/bias incident.
Two days later, police were made aware of a video circulating on social media that was reportedly filmed outside an elementary school in Vaughan. While police have not released details about the footage, they confirmed no threats were made and there is no current risk to public safety.
“York Regional Police is aware of the increased concern within the community,” the department said in a news release, adding that although the incidents are being investigated separately, both will be treated seriously.
In response, YRP and the York Region District School Board have stepped up efforts to ensure safety and inclusion. Youth Engagement Officers will maintain a visible presence near the affected school throughout the week, and enhanced patrols are planned in the surrounding area.
“Hate has no place in York Region,” the statement continued. “We will not tolerate any form of hate crime.”
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incidents or who may have relevant video footage to contact the YRP Hate Crime Prevention Unit at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6552, or reach out anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
