The Role and Functions of Water in the Body
Introduction:
More than 60% of the human body’s weight and 70% of its muscles are composed of water. Water is present in the blood, lungs, and brain. The high amount of water in our bodies serves very important purposes that are directly linked to our health and even our survival. Without a doubt, we all have been familiar with the importance of drinking enough water for health since childhood, but often, the reasons behind this are not as prominent in our daily lives. This can cause us to forget the necessity of drinking enough clean water throughout the day. Let’s review some of the most important functions of water and its significance for the body’s health.
Main Functions of Water in the Body:
Researchers consider keeping the body cool as one of the reasons for the high volume of water in the human body. The chemical activities that take place in all of our body’s organs, along with the heat generated by muscle activity, produce heat that could potentially burn us. However, the water surrounding the tissues dissipates this excess heat.
Water as a Powerful Shock Absorber:
Another function of the water in the body’s tissues is to prevent severe impacts on the organs. Our internal sea acts as a shock absorber. For example, the fluid surrounding the brain ensures that the brain remains protected from hard impacts. Likewise, bones, joints, and nerves are surrounded by body fluids, allowing us to withstand contact with objects without injury. Without water in the body, actions like stomping or hammering would be painful and unbearable.
Water as a Solvent for Important Substances:
The body’s internal water is one of the best solvents, carrying valuable chemical solutions and suspended materials to different parts of the body. For instance, its ability to retain sodium and potassium in solution is essential for transmitting electrical impulses, which enable muscle and nerve activity.
A Powerful Cleanser, Even Within the Body:
Water in the body transports nutrients and waste materials. Oxygen is carried by hemoglobin in the blood from the lungs to the body’s cells. The food we eat is digested in an aqueous environment, and the digestive products are carried by the blood to all body cells. Therefore, water not only makes food digestion easier, but it also facilitates the elimination of waste from the body in the form of sweat, urine, and feces.
Conclusion:
Drinking enough water helps hydrate and nourish skin cells, promoting beautiful and glowing skin. Drinking water prevents dryness and skin cracking. It also aids in detoxifying the body and cleansing it, prevents puffiness, and helps firm the skin. In the future, we will discuss the difference between acidic and alkaline water.
