Introduction
The Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released its annual report on the world’s most liveable cities, with two Canadian cities coming out on top. This organization conducts an annual evaluation and ranking of cities based on factors such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure to create the world’s liveability rankings.
The Criteria
EIU’s selection is based on the following standards compiled to achieve a common score:
- Stability (the existence of mild crimes, violent crimes, threats of fear, military disputes, and/or citizens’ anxiety or dispute);
- (Public and Public Health accessibility and quality, adaptation from the world bank data -the possibility of obtaining a counter drug and general healthcare indicators);
- Culture and the environment (humidity and temperature, climate discomfort for travelers, levels of corruption and censorship, social or religious restrictions, sports and cultural accessibility, food and drinks, consumer goods and services).
- Education (accessibility and quality of private education and state education from the World Bank data); and
- Infrastructure (road network quality, public transport, international relations, water provision, energy, telecommunications, high quality housing).
Calgary
Once again voted the most livable city in Canada, Calgary received an overall score of 96.8. The city has consistently performed well on stability, health and education (where it scored a perfect 100), but is still hampered by lower scores on culture, environment and infrastructure, although even here Calgary scores 90 or higher.
Vancouver
Vancouver dropped two places in this year’s ranking but remains one of the most liveable cities in the world with an overall score of 96.6. The city continues to perform well in education and health (100 points each), but scores slightly lower in culture and environment, stability and infrastructure.
