In a devastating natural disaster that stunned residents and authorities alike, the picturesque Swiss village of Blatten has been nearly wiped out after a glacier collapse sent millions of cubic meters of ice and debris crashing into the Loetschental valley.
Drone footage captured the harrowing moment when approximately 1.5 million cubic meters of the Birch glacier broke away around 3:30 p.m. local time, unleashing a thunderous landslide that buried most of the village beneath rubble and ice.
Blatten, a remote mountain community of just 300 people, is known not only for its serene snow-covered landscape but also as part of the route for the prestigious Tour de Suisse cycling race. Now, that tranquil reputation has been shattered.
Local officials had evacuated the village on May 19, following warnings from geological experts who noted signs of accelerated glacial movement. Their foresight likely saved lives—despite the scale of the destruction, no casualties have been reported.
Matthias Bellwald, mayor of Blatten, described the moment as “unimaginable.” Fighting back emotion during a press briefing, he said:
“We have lost our village, but not our heart. We will support each other and console each other. After a long night, it will be morning again.”
According to Stephane Ganzer, head of security in the southern Valais region, about 90% of the village has been either destroyed or buried. He warned that the situation remains unstable, stating, “There’s a risk that the situation could get worse.”
Emergency response has included rapid deployment of the Swiss army’s disaster relief unit and aerial search teams. Rescue helicopters have been scanning the affected region to assess the scale of the damage and monitor potential secondary slides.
The Swiss government has pledged financial support to assist displaced residents, aiming to help them either rebuild or remain close to their ancestral lands.
Geologists have long cautioned that rising global temperatures and thawing permafrost are destabilizing the Alpine landscape. The collapse in Blatten is one of the most severe examples yet of what experts have warned: that entire communities in glacial regions could be living under looming geological threats.
The incident echoes a similar evacuation in 2023 in the village of Brienz, where residents were forced to abandon their homes due to fears of a collapsing mountainside. They have yet to return on a permanent basis.
Now, Blatten joins a growing list of Alpine towns transformed by climate-driven instability—its destruction a stark reminder that the beauty of the mountains is matched only by their unpredictable power.
