Summer McIntosh wins fourth gold at the World Aquatics Championships, solidifying her status as a global swimming powerhouse.
The 18-year-old Canadian star dominated the 400-metre individual medley on Sunday, clocking a championship-record time of 4:25.78. She outpaced Australia’s Jenna Forrester and Japan’s Mio Narita, who shared silver with 4:33.26. China’s 12-year-old Zidi Yu impressed with a fourth-place finish.
This latest win, marking the moment Summer McIntosh wins fourth gold in Singapore, follows her victories in the 200m butterfly, 200m medley, and 400m freestyle. She now boasts 13 career medals at the world championships — including eight gold.
Her pursuit of five golds fell just short on Saturday, when American legend Katie Ledecky won the 800m freestyle. McIntosh took bronze behind Australia’s Lani Pallister.
Canada’s overall performance
McIntosh wasn’t the only Canadian making waves. Montreal’s Ilya Kharun secured bronze in the men’s 100m butterfly, while Mary-Sophie Harvey of Laval earned bronze in the women’s 200m medley.
Canada’s 4×100 mixed medley relay team also took bronze. In diving, Simone Leathead of Montreal claimed silver in the 20-metre high dive — her first medal at worlds.
McIntosh contributed five of Canada’s eight swimming medals, making her the standout of the meet. Canada’s women’s 4×100 medley relay team, featuring McIntosh, finished fifth. The men’s team placed sixth in the same event.
Looking ahead
As McIntosh continues to rise in the swimming world, her achievements at just 18 signal an exciting future. With the Paris Olympics around the corner, all eyes will be on her performance.
