A tragic accident off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, has left six people dead and nine others injured after a tourist submarine sank in the Red Sea, according to municipal officials. The vessel, carrying 45 tourists from various countries, was operating near a popular beach along the city’s tourist promenade when it went down.
Rescue teams responded quickly to the emergency, managing to save 29 passengers, according to a statement from the Red Sea governorate. However, the cause of the sinking remains unknown at this time.
This incident comes just months after a tourist yacht capsized in the Red Sea in November, following official warnings about rough waters. That accident resulted in four fatalities, while 33 people were safely rescued.
Tourism is a major pillar of Egypt’s economy, but travel along the Red Sea has seen a decline due to safety concerns and increasing regional instability. Authorities are expected to investigate the latest tragedy to determine what went wrong.
