WASHINGTON (AP) — A man believed to have traveled from Indiana while armed was shot by U.S. Secret Service agents near the White House early Sunday following a tense confrontation, authorities reported.
The incident occurred around midnight, roughly a block from the White House. The Secret Service, in an official statement, confirmed that no one else was injured during the altercation. At the time of the shooting, President Donald Trump was not in Washington, D.C., but rather in Florida.
According to the statement, the Secret Service had received a tip from local law enforcement regarding a potentially suicidal individual who was traveling from Indiana. Acting on this information, officers located the suspect’s vehicle and identified an individual matching his description in the vicinity of the White House.
“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” the statement explained.
The suspect sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital for medical treatment. His current condition remains unknown.
Due to the involvement of law enforcement officers in the shooting, the Metropolitan Police Department has taken over the investigation. However, officials have not yet released further details regarding the suspect’s identity, motive, or potential threats posed by the incident.
Authorities continue to assess the situation while ensuring the security of the White House and surrounding areas.
