A large-scale search operation is underway for Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student who disappeared six days ago while vacationing in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
Konanki was last seen in the early morning hours of March 6 at the beach near the Riu República Hotel. Her sudden disappearance has triggered a joint investigation involving Dominican authorities, the U.S. FBI, and India, where her family originates from. Despite extensive search efforts, little information has surfaced regarding her whereabouts.
Authorities Investigate Possible Drowning
Dominican officials are treating Konanki’s disappearance as an accident, with a “special search operation in the ocean” currently underway, according to President Luis Abinader. He reassured the public that the Dominican Republic, which welcomes over 11 million tourists annually, is one of the safest destinations in Latin America.
However, her case follows a recent tragedy in the area. In January, four tourists drowned after being swept away by powerful ocean currents near Punta Cana’s Arena Gorda beach. The Dominican Republic’s civil defense agency confirmed that a red flag had been raised at the time to warn of dangerous conditions.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, where Konanki’s family resides, stated that rough waters were reported in Punta Cana on the night of her disappearance. However, it remains unclear whether warnings were in place at the time.
The Night She Went Missing
Konanki arrived in Punta Cana on March 3 with five other University of Pittsburgh students. Surveillance footage from March 6 at approximately 4:15 a.m. shows Konanki and her friends heading toward the beach along with two men. An hour earlier, the group had been drinking in the hotel lobby, according to Dominican police sources.
At 4:55 a.m., cameras captured five of the women and one man leaving the beach—but Konanki remained behind with another man in his 20s. At around 9 a.m., surveillance footage showed the man leaving the beach alone.
He has since been questioned by authorities but is not considered a suspect. He told investigators that he and Konanki went into the ocean, but he felt sick, got out, and fell asleep on a lounge chair. While he has provided slightly differing accounts, authorities believe language barriers may have contributed to the inconsistencies.
When Konanki did not return to her hotel room, her friends began searching for her. They reported her missing to hotel staff at around 4 p.m. on March 7. Her sarong-style beach cover-up was later discovered on a lounge chair, with no signs of a struggle.
Massive Search Efforts Underway
Over 300 officers, including specialists, forensic analysts, tactical units, and aquatic teams, have been deployed to locate Konanki. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and conducting interviews with witnesses and hotel staff.
Her parents, Subbarayudu and Sreedevi Konanki, flew to Punta Cana with family friends to aid in the search. Her father, devastated by her disappearance, has called for the investigation to expand beyond a potential drowning.
“We need authorities to consider all possibilities, including kidnapping or human trafficking,” he stated.
The Dominican Civil Defense spokesperson noted that if Konanki had drowned, it could take over a week for a body to surface in warm waters. However, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman cautioned against premature conclusions, emphasizing that the circumstances remain unclear.
Konanki, a pre-med student with aspirations of becoming a doctor, has been described by friends and family as bright, responsible, and deeply loved. As the search continues, those closest to her remain hopeful for answers.
