Many officers traveled from posts in conflict zones across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. Experts say the scale, urgency, and secrecy make this gathering unlike typical high-level meetings.
Mark Cancian, a retired Marine colonel, said the meeting could outline Hegseth’s vision for defense strategy. However, he questioned the short notice and the mystery surrounding the event.
Trump to Join the Event
Although Trump initially appeared unaware of the meeting, the White House later confirmed he will address the generals. The president told NBC News he plans to highlight military achievements and speak on “positive developments.” Vice President JD Vance downplayed speculation, claiming such gatherings are not unusual.
NATO Officials React
Italian Adm. Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, chair of NATO’s Military Committee, called the meeting unprecedented in his 49 years of service. Meanwhile, analysts suggest the gathering may symbolize a dramatic policy shift more than a practical exchange of views.
Michael O’Hanlon from Brookings warned the scale suggests theatrics rather than genuine dialogue. Similarly, Bryan Clark of the Hudson Institute said the administration may use the Pentagon generals meeting to signal a major defense pivot.

Hegseth has focused on border security, urban deployments, and counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean. Clark believes the meeting will push leaders to align with a new defense strategy that prioritizes the Northern Hemisphere over Europe and Asia.
Forcing commanders to attend in person, rather than using video conferences, underscores the meeting’s importance. Clark said the decision demonstrates urgency and sets the tone for future operations.
