Cape Breton’s Northern Highlands will soon welcome a brand-new coastal hiking trail, thanks to a $3 million investment from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). The funding, provided through ACOA’s Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), will support the design and construction of the Jajiktek Seawall Hiking Trail, a 50-kilometre route that aims to enhance outdoor tourism and local economic development.
The new trail will feature three overnight huts, allowing for extended multi-day hikes. Guided tours will also be available, and the project will expand seasonal outdoor activities by incorporating opportunities for skiing and snowshoeing during the winter months.
MP Mike Kelloway, representing Cape Breton-Canso, emphasized the trail’s potential to attract both locals and visitors. “This project will offer an unforgettable outdoor experience, drawing families and adventurers alike to explore the beauty of the Highlands,” he said.
Federal Minister Anita Anand highlighted the broader economic impact of the initiative. “This trail is about more than just breathtaking views—it’s about job creation, supporting local businesses, and strengthening our communities,” she stated.
With construction set to begin, excitement is building for what is expected to be a major addition to Cape Breton’s outdoor recreation offerings, further solidifying the region as a top destination for nature enthusiasts.
