Gunfire erupted at Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University on Saturday night, killing one person and wounding six others. The shooting happened during the school’s homecoming celebration, turning a night of joy into tragedy.
Authorities said the violence occurred around 9:30 p.m. near the International Cultural Center, where students and alumni gathered for outdoor festivities. Tents, music, and tables filled the area before panic spread through the crowd.
Chester County DA Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said police detained one suspect but are checking for additional shooters.
Investigation continues amid chaos
De Barrena-Sarobe told reporters early Sunday that investigators “don’t believe this was an attack designed to cause mass harm.” Still, authorities are working to identify everyone involved. He described the scene as “chaotic,” adding that people ran in every direction as shots rang out.
Officials have asked anyone with video footage or eyewitness information to contact the FBI to help the ongoing investigation. Chester County detectives are leading the case, supported by state police and federal agents.
Victims and campus impact
Authorities have not released the victims’ identities or updated their medical conditions. The university, located about 45 miles southwest of Philadelphia, remains under close watch.
Lincoln University Police Chief Marc Partee said the shooting shattered a joyful homecoming and left the community devastated.
Governor pledges support
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said on X that he had been briefed about the Lincoln University shooting and offered state assistance. “Join Lori and me in praying for the Lincoln University community,” he wrote.
The historically Black university, founded in 1854, has long celebrated its legacy of education and empowerment. The tragedy now leaves students, staff, and alumni mourning what should have been a unifying event.
