WASHINGTON — Sean Charles Dunn, 37, has been fired from his Justice Department role after assaulting a federal officer. The incident occurred late Sunday during increased law-enforcement patrols in the capital.
Dunn, an international affairs specialist in the DOJ’s criminal division, hurled a “sub-style” sandwich at a Customs and Border Protection agent, court records show. Video of the encounter quickly went viral online.
“This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months,” Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote. “You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement.”
Confrontation Details
According to a police affidavit, Dunn approached a group of CBP officers around 11 p.m. He pointed at one agent, called him a “fascist,” and demanded, “Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!”
The video shows Dunn throwing the sandwich at the agent’s chest before attempting to flee. Police apprehended him shortly afterward. Dunn now faces a felony assault charge.
Political Context
The Justice Department sandwich assault occurred as President Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops and federal officers across Washington. Trump cited rising crime as justification. Local officials maintain violent crime remains near a 30-year low.
This firing highlights DOJ accountability under Bondi’s leadership. Critics note the department still employs former FBI agent Jared Lane Wise, charged for joining the January 6, 2021, Capitol mob and cheering rioters. Wise currently advises Justice Department pardon attorney Ed Martin Jr.
Legal and Career Implications
The Justice Department confirmed Dunn’s termination. An attorney for Dunn has not yet responded. Legal experts say the high-profile assault may affect future federal employment opportunities for him.
The case underscores tension between federal law enforcement and citizens, particularly during politically charged security operations.
