Ottawa Senators fans didn’t hold back their frustration on Saturday after U.S. President Donald Trump announced steep tariffs on Canadian imports.
As the Star-Spangled Banner played before the Senators faced off against the Minnesota Wild, a significant portion of the crowd loudly booed. Videos shared on social media also captured fans clapping and cheering in protest.
The backlash came just hours after Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian imports—a move that signals a major shift in U.S.-Canada trade relations.
For months, Canadian officials have warned that these tariffs could have severe economic consequences, putting thousands of jobs at risk. In response, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to unveil countermeasures.
Both federal and provincial governments have been working behind the scenes to finalize a strategic retaliation plan. As part of a unified “Team Canada” effort, officials have been consulting with key stakeholders to mount an effective response.
The tariffs are set to take effect on Tuesday.
