British Columbians may have been startled awake early Monday by an earthquake that struck between Vancouver Island and Washington state.
The quake occurred at 5:02 a.m., about 42 kilometers east of Sidney, B.C., near the U.S. San Juan Islands, at a depth of 17 kilometers.
Initially recorded at a magnitude of 4.6 by Earthquakes Canada, it was later revised to 4.1. Officials say the tremor was “lightly felt” in Victoria and Vancouver, with reports of shaking reaching as far as Chilliwack, Whistler, and the Vancouver Island coast up to Courtenay.
“Just woke me up,” Vancouver city councillor Peter Meiszner shared on social media. “Shook my building pretty good in downtown Vancouver.”
No damage has been reported, and there is no tsunami risk for B.C.
This marks the third noticeable earthquake in southwestern B.C. in recent weeks, following a 4.7-magnitude tremor near Sechelt on Feb. 21 and a 3.8 quake near Victoria on Feb. 13.
