A truck attack on a crowd in New Orleans, Louisiana, has left at least 10 people dead and 30 others injured.
According to reports, the incident occurred early Wednesday morning, January 1, on Bourbon Street in the historic French Quarter. A truck traveling at high speed plowed into a large crowd. After stopping, the driver exited the vehicle and began shooting at people, prompting a response and return fire from police.
The New Orleans Police Department confirmed the incident in a brief statement to CBS News, noting that investigations are still underway to determine the exact number of casualties and further details.
Bourbon Street, a popular tourist and nightlife destination, is typically crowded during New Year’s Eve celebrations. The attack took place in the final hours of New Year festivities, just before the Allstate Sugar Bowl football game at the Caesars Superdome, which is expected to attract thousands of attendees.
This attack follows a similar incident less than two weeks ago at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, where a vehicle attack killed five people and injured over 200.
In the Magdeburg attack, the suspect was identified as Talib Jawad Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old Saudi national known for his anti-Islam activism on social media. He had reportedly posted content supporting Germany’s far-right political parties.
