Canadians abroad assistance drop by over 50% occurred this week as thousands flee the Middle East conflict. Global Affairs Canada reports that citizens are now using more commercial flights and ground transport. Over 7,000 Canadians and permanent residents have returned home since the war began on February 28. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand noted that demand for government help has finally started to decrease. Despite the lower call volumes, Canada continues to provide travel options for those still in the region.
Commercial Options and Resuming Flights
Airlines have gradually resumed operations in several parts of the Middle East recently. Consequently, fewer Canadians now require government-coordinated airplane seats or ground transportation. Global Affairs Canada has assisted 871 people in reaching safe third countries since March 4. Department officials are currently monitoring upcoming flights from Beirut and planned road movements from Bahrain. The government also chartered a flight from the United Arab Emirates to Istanbul to help stranded citizens.

High Stakes and Rising Death Tolls
The conflict has already caused significant loss of life and massive infrastructure damage. Punishing airstrikes by the United States and Israel have killed at least 1,230 people so far. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned on Tuesday that these military strikes will soon intensify. Meanwhile, Gulf nations have closed airspaces to defend against Iranian missiles and drones. Despite the violence, Ottawa reports no known Canadian injuries or deaths during the current hostilities.
Travel Risks and Border Advice
Over 110,700 citizens have signed up for the official Canadians abroad registry this month. The government still classifies Iran, Lebanon, and Israel under the “avoid all travel” category. Canadians in Iran are advised to reach the borders of Turkey, Armenia, or Azerbaijan independently. Officials are stationed at these borders to assist with travel documents and onward journeys. However, citizens traveling through Iran to these borders must do so at their own risk.
