NAIROBI, Kenya — A British citizen lost his life in Kenya after being struck by a vehicle from President William Ruto’s motorcade.
The victim, 79-year-old Edgar Charles Frederick, was fatally injured on Thursday as the presidential convoy was en route to a public event in Nairobi.
According to police spokesperson Michael Muchiri, the driver of the government vehicle involved in the accident was arrested but later released on cash bail.
A spokesperson for the British High Commission confirmed that they are “in contact with the authorities” regarding the incident.
The accident sparked outrage on social media, with many Kenyans criticizing the high-speed nature of the president’s motorcade, especially on busy roads.
Footage shared online showed Frederick lying on the road with a severe head injury while the vehicle responsible for the accident failed to stop.
The police explained that presidential motorcades often travel at high speeds for security purposes.
Muchiri revealed that Frederick had been visiting Kenya to see his sister and nephew, who live in the country. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
