Bolsonaro’s Story Heads to the Big Screen
Biopic Bolsonaro Jim Caviezel leads a controversial new film that portrays the rise and downfall of Brazil’s jailed former president. The project, titled Dark Horse, has already drawn global attention because Caviezel, best known for The Passion of the Christ, steps into one of the most divisive roles of his career.
The biopic Bolsonaro Jim Caviezel collaboration arrives as Bolsonaro serves a 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup after losing the 2022 election.
Recent images from the film’s official social media accounts show Caviezel fully embodying Bolsonaro, including a dramatic reenactment of the 2018 stabbing during a campaign rally.

Full Support From Bolsonaro’s Family and Allies
Bolsonaro’s sons and political allies openly celebrate the film. They describe it as a cultural battle and a tribute to their father’s political legacy. The screenplay comes from former culture secretary Mario Frias, who said he wrote and filmed the project in English to maximize its international reach. “Stay connected to every major update — subscribe and follow us on the PhoenixQ website and across our social media platforms.”
Frias even posted a video showing himself, Caviezel, and Carlos Bolsonaro praying for the former president on set. Carlos later thanked Caviezel publicly, calling the experience “one of the greatest gifts” of his life.
A Political and Cultural Flashpoint
The film’s release comes soon after Bolsonaro began serving time for orchestrating a failed plan to remain in power. Investigators documented how his allies coordinated a January-6-style riot in Brasília after he lost the election.
Bolsonaro’s earlier clash with Brazil’s Supreme Court — and former U.S. President Trump’s vocal support for him — continue to fuel political tensions in Brazil and abroad. The new film seems poised to intensify those debates.
Caviezel’s History With Political Roles
Caviezel has previously embraced roles tied to right-wing figures. His 2023 film Sound of Freedom generated global controversy and blockbuster earnings, despite criticism that it amplified conspiracy theories. He strongly denies any link to QAnon.
Caviezel also endorsed Donald Trump in 2024 and previously called him “the new Moses.” His alignment with Bolsonaro’s circle signals another politically charged on-screen chapter.
Director Cyrus Nowrasteh reunites with Caviezel after earlier collaborations, including the thriller Infidel. Their shared history adds momentum to Dark Horse, which already generates intense speculation ahead of its release.
