LUCKNOW, India (AP) — Avalanche Traps 41 Construction Workers Near India-Tibet Border
At least 41 construction workers remain trapped after a powerful avalanche swept through a work site near India’s border with Tibet on Friday, officials reported.
The disaster occurred near Mana Pass in northern Uttarakhand state, initially burying 57 workers under snow. According to senior police officer Rajeev Swaroop, rescue teams have managed to pull out 16 individuals so far.
Three of the rescued workers were rushed to a military hospital for treatment, while efforts continue to locate the remaining missing workers despite harsh weather conditions.
Pushkar Singh Dhami, Uttarakhand’s top elected official, confirmed that the national disaster response force is assisting in the rescue operations.
The ecologically fragile Himalayan region, already impacted by global warming, is highly susceptible to avalanches. In 2022, a similar disaster claimed the lives of 27 trainee mountaineers in the Uttarakhand region.
