Immigration has been a hot topic in Canada, with much time spent this year on managing and reducing Canada’s temporary population through the following measurements:
- As of August 28, people temporarily residing in Canada on a tourist visa are no longer eligible to apply for job-supported work permits in Canada. A temporary policy allowing visitors to apply for these work permits was introduced in August 2020 to assist some visitors to Canada who were unable to return home due to border closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the additional objective of assisting employers with closing key jobs.
Note: The policy to change visitor vis to open work permit is still in effect for Iranians.
- Regarding the study permit, the Immigration, Refugee, and Canadian Citizenship, IRCC is currently demanding that Designated Learning Institutes, DLIs verifies all acceptance within 10 days of the student declaration. The IRCC also restricts the number of foreign students accepted by Canada in the next two years.
- On Aug. 26, the IRCC announced it would suspend the processing of certain Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) applications for certain candidates in the low-wage bracket of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) effective Sept. 26, 2024. This will affect applicants in census metropolitan areas with unemployment rates of 6 percent or higher.
